I think Audioconfusion is known for recording live. Errr... by that, I mean I know it's known for recording live because I’ve had bands NOT record with me, because they thought they HAD to record live. Haha! (Not true by the way).

I didnt always record that way. I definitely recorded a few bands live but not really by choice; more out of necessity.

It wasn't until I recorded this band, The Half Empties, that I learned how cool recording live could actually be.

It was sometime in 2002, that I moved my shop to this storefront location in Tempe, Az. This awesome garage rock band, Big Vinny and the Cattle Thieves (now, pretty much The Plainfield Butchers) was one of the first bands I recorded at the new place. Wes, the main guy from Big Vinny, hit me up about recording another band he played bass in: The Half Empties.

The Half Empties were a good, solid punk band with catchy hooks and I was surprised I had never heard of them before. One of the guitarists in the Empties was this guy named Orin. Orin was originally from NYC and was in a bunch of punk rock bands in the 80's. He said, "we'd really like to record live.” I told him, "well, I don’t have enough iso rooms to record everyone at once." But, Orin didn’t want to use iso rooms. Instead, he wanted everything in the same room. I told him, “we can do it but there will be bleed,” but he didn’t care. He wanted the bleed. Hesitantly, I agreed.

If I remember correctly, the guitar amps were next to the drums facing the same way. I baffled them up as much as I could to control some of the bleed and the bass amp was in the vocal booth around the corner. We also threw a mic in this empty acute-triangle-shaped-room to get this big open sound. It ended up sounding really cool and I was hooked!

Since then I’ve basically been using this same concept; just altering it a little bit. I don't use any baffles and I welcome the bleed! I still keep in contact with Wes and have done some different stuff with Orin. Actually, earlier this year I recorded one of Orin’s many bands he’s in called; The 16 Eyes.

And guess what? We recorded live!
